What is a floorcloth?
Floorcloths are one of the earliest forms of floor covering, originally used over dirt floors back in the early 1700s. For most people they were an affordable alternative to woven rugs, being made from old canvas sails. The basic materials; canvas, paint and sealant have not changed, though of course paint and sealant quality and type have improved. I use only environmentally friendly, water-based products in my work.

Why a floorcloth?
Floorcloths are paintings, designed to be used as rugs! They are durable and easily maintained, so they are perfect for homes with kids and/or pets.  They don't collect dirt or odors, so they are great for allergy sufferers.  They are ideal for use on floors with radiant heat. Best of all, they can be custom made in almost any size and color! They can reinforce a color scheme, tie areas of a room together, or be a focal point.

Floorcloth or Floor Mat?
This is a distinction that I have made, which is not necessarily standard within the craft. A floorcloth, as described above, is a time-consuming project, and the cost is a reflection of that. A more economical alternative, a floor mat is made from pre-primed floorcloth canvas, and is not hemmed. This material, while not suitable for large floorcloths (due to its light weight), is excellent for pet mats, table accessories and other smaller painted canvas items. The result is not as durable, of course, but quite adequate for the above mentioned applications.
